Prominent among the silk handloom saris of Bengal is the Baluchari and the Tangail Jamdhani. Fine count quality weaves, each has its specialty. The appeal of the Baluchari Saree lies in its colour harmony. Colours preferred are red, green, yellow, blue and their shades. Silk brocade designs suited to the base colour, are decorated with attractive motifs. The Pallav or Pallu is generally adorned by folk lore or mythological themes.

Balucharis are made from silk. With silk brocade designs suited to the base colour, they are decorated with attractive motifs. One of the major themes that adorn the Pallav or Pallu of the Baluchari Sarees are mythological stories depicted on the walls of the terra cotta temples that the Malla rulers had built and are located in present day Bengal. The Malla dynasty rule had influenced motifs and the narratives from the Indian epics Mahabharata and Ramayana were obvious subjects for depictions on the thematic pallus. Today floral motifs are very popular.

Many figured patterns have also been introduced. Baluchari Sarees are preferred as soft and comfortable wear, for their fine weave and stylish looks. Some popular themes of today as flower bunches, animals, court scenes of an earlier era, boat etc. adorning the Baluchari Saree make them most attractive and apt for a variety of occasions; be it wedding ceremonies, parties, grand functions, social gatherings or as corporate wear.

The current trend of increasing use of organic materials, has found its way into the experimental manufacture of the Baluchari Organic Sari. Fine blends of cotton with both banana fibres and bamboo shoots replace the silk yarn, while acidic dyes have been substituted with dyes made from extracts of fruits, vegetables, leaves, turmeric etc.

Jamdhani hand weaving is a necessary accompaniment for Bengal Silk sarees where cotton and gold thread weaving create motifs of geometric patterns and floral designs in colourful hues. Dhania Khali and thangail are popular weaving styles and the sarees like the Thangail Jamdhani weave have popular motifs like Nature, the sun, the moon and stars.

A Baluchari Sari was once worn only by women from the upper class and landlord families in Bengal during festive occasions and weddings. Today it is widely worn without distinction in many parts of the country on various occasions. Post-independence revival by a person named Subho Thakur, through the weaving skills of Das, a weaver from Bishnupur and knowledgeable in this art form, restored the glory of this fine weave once again.

This time round the Baluchari Saree once hand-woven, was tried out on Jacquard looms and the success of the experiment is now for all to see in the current weaving method of this art weave. The Baluchari saree has won the Presidential award on two occasions for its weaving style and has been prominently displayed in international trade fairs.

online shopping for party pure handloom bhagalpuri silk sarees collection by unnatisilks

Bhagalpur in Bihar, India, famed for its exquisite Bhagalpuri silk sarees in Tussar and Dupion Silk, has taken the world of fashion by storm.

Tussar Silk Sarees, also known as ‘Kosa’ Silks, are made from silk of the moth genus Antheraea. Known as ‘wild silk’, it comes from the forests of Jharkhand and the raw silk has a deep golden colour and of good texture. Tussar Silk staples, shorter and less expensive compared to that of cultivated silk, have the cocoons boiled to make the silk cocoon extraction process easy. However some weavers prefer to allow the silkworms to leave the cocoon before boiling , and is popularly known as Ahimsa or non-violent silk . The woven Tussar Silk Saree is light on the body, airy and has a comfortable feel about it. Hand-woven pure Tussar Silk Sarees are well known for their zari borders, motifs and the hand crafted designs that enrich them. Hand spun and coloured with vegetable dyes, the fabrics produce are eco-friendly.

Tussar Silk Sarees with fancy block prints, batik, Bandhani work on the Silk body and appliqués or embroidered patch work accompanying it, are beautiful creations. Stylish north Indian half and half tussar silk saris having kantha embroidery and banarsi border are eye-catchers. Well-suited for Indian weddings, and as bridal attire!

The Bhagalpuri Dupion Silk Saree has a charismatic appeal in its weave. Natural uneven lumps of the silk yarn, maintained in the fabric weave form an intended pattern that is unique and appealing.
Dupion is also known as Dupioni or Douppioni. Dupion Silk is one of the purest silks in its natural form. It is easily distinguished from other forms of silk by its inherent property of lumps or silk knots within the yarn fabric. The inherent qualities of the Dupion Silk Saree makes it suitable for dyeing the yarn to any colour, is comparatively easy to sew, and is highly wrinkle-resistant.

The creases on the fabric form so well that it assumes a crisp and neat look. The uneven weave with nubs (lumps of yarn) showing at regular intervals form an unconscious pattern indicative of an underlying design. Double cocoons are reeled on the Charakha, or hand-spinning wheel. But with the Dupion Reeling Machine being introduced, the Dupion Silk Saree woven with two threads apart from the nubs create a shimmering effect. Dupion Silk Sarees though low priced compared to pure silk sarees get better priced with adornments of pearls, beads, kundans and sequins and are much-preferred wear for wedding ceremonies.

There are extraordinary Tussar and Dupion Bhagalpuri silks available in the Unnati range online. Rapid block designer floral prints on light and bright background Dupion silks, pure Dupion in dark shades and lush colours, light silks in Tussar with beautiful mirror work, and embroidery covering the saree, floral adorned borders, designer pallu with large bootis, plain pure bhagalpuri dupion silks with beautiful kantha work borders and embroidery, Tussar silk half half sarees with large wide stripes, multi-colour mixes and fancy designer patterns.
