Bhagalpur in Bihar, India, famed for its exquisite Bhagalpuri silk sarees in Tussar and Dupion Silk, has taken
the world of fashion by storm.
Tussar Silk Sarees,
also known as ‘Kosa’ Silks, are made from silk of the moth genus Antheraea.
Known as ‘wild silk’, it comes from the forests of Jharkhand and the raw silk
has a deep golden colour and of good texture. Tussar Silk staples, shorter and
less expensive compared to that of cultivated silk, have the cocoons boiled to
make the silk cocoon extraction process easy. However some weavers prefer to
allow the silkworms to leave the cocoon before boiling , and is popularly known
as Ahimsa or non-violent silk . The woven Tussar Silk Saree is light on the
body, airy and has a comfortable feel about it. Hand-woven pure Tussar Silk Sarees are well known for their zari borders,
motifs and the hand crafted designs that enrich them. Hand spun and coloured
with vegetable dyes, the fabrics produce are eco-friendly.
Tussar Silk Sarees
with fancy block prints, batik, Bandhani work on the Silk body and
appliqués or embroidered patch work accompanying it, are beautiful creations.
Stylish north Indian half and half tussar silk saris having kantha embroidery
and banarsi border are eye-catchers. Well-suited for Indian weddings, and as
bridal attire!
The Bhagalpuri Dupion Silk Saree has a charismatic appeal in
its weave. Natural uneven lumps of the silk yarn, maintained in the fabric
weave form an intended pattern that is unique and appealing.
Dupion is also known as Dupioni or Douppioni. Dupion Silk is
one of the purest silks in its natural form. It is easily distinguished from
other forms of silk by its inherent property of lumps or silk knots within the
yarn fabric. The inherent qualities of the Dupion Silk Saree makes it suitable
for dyeing the yarn to any colour, is comparatively easy to sew, and is highly
wrinkle-resistant.
The creases on the
fabric form so well that it assumes a crisp and neat look. The uneven weave
with nubs (lumps of yarn) showing at regular intervals form an unconscious
pattern indicative of an underlying design. Double cocoons are reeled on the
Charakha, or hand-spinning wheel. But with the Dupion Reeling Machine being
introduced, the Dupion
Silk Saree woven
with two threads apart from the nubs create a shimmering effect. Dupion Silk
Sarees though low priced compared to pure silk sarees get better priced with
adornments of pearls, beads, kundans and sequins and are much-preferred wear
for wedding ceremonies.
