TRADITIONAL PURE BATIK PRINTS HANDLOOM SAREES COLLECTION @UNNATISILKS

A lot of white floral art work on a contrastingly dark background, either on the entire portion or sections of the saree, it most probably would be Batik printing.

TRADITIONAL BATIK HAND PAINTED COTTON SAREES ON

A wave of fresh breeze, novel and catchy, Batik prints are eye-catching for their picturesque white designs on coloured canvas. Batik on sarees came as a tried-out experiment that succeeded. An art from countries like Indonesia and China, our traditional stylists have over a period evolved a unique style of their own.
PURE BATIK COTTON SAREES COLLECTION

Using ‘resists’ for making designs on a fabric, the conventional Batik process has a resist or a physical block in some form or the other to prevent desired areas on the fabric from being penetrated by the initial dye. Generally wax is used as a resist in Batik.

The block printed areas where resists are in place, come out as un-dyed areas in the dyed fabric and could be coloured differently in repeat wax dye process.

This wax-dye process could be repeated several times at the same place or done at different places for every subsequent colour change. Batik can be done very easily with various types of dyes & wax on cotton, silk and other natural fabrics like jute and blends.
The rarer type of Batik is Pen Batik. Fine designs are made on the fabric using ‘Tjanting’ tools. Pen Batik is a little more painstaking comparatively on account of fine detailing to be taken done by hand and molten wax to be poured a certain temperature carefully on the design lines with Batik dropper pen.
A lot of care is taken since too thin a layer could give way to colour dye to seep through surface cracks.

Temperature of the wax is normally kept between 200 and 230 degrees.
In the former or conventional method vats or tubs with boiling water are used to melt away the wax. In the latter a small tub with hot water is generally preferred. After the entire resist dyeing process is over, and the wax has melted away in hot water, a neatly dyed and design filled Batik imprinted fabric is available.
There is a sensational Batik prints range of handloom cotton sarees from Unnati Silks where the colours are vibrant, the prints awesome and the themes mind-blowing.

In fact, cotton being easy to work with generally gives best results which the Batik Printed cotton sarees on display so finely showcase. The idea in multi-layer colouring is to start with lighter shades of the dye and proceed to deeper ones.

There are whole lot of such multi-dyed, block printed Batiks at Unnati where care has been exercised at each step to ensure pure outcomes of fine light floral prints on good contrasting backgrounds.

And what a refreshing lot too! Unnati ‘s range of Pen Batik Salwar Kameez highlights the brilliant art on ethnic apparel. In modern floral designs and abstract art using the virtues of Batik through the special pen, these fabrics usher in a new freshness and appeal.

SUMMER HANDLOOM MADURAI COTTON SAREES COLLECTION@UNNATISILKS

A loom is a device by which cloth is woven. Weaving involves a process by which a pattern or lattice framework is created by warp or longitudinal threads, tightly stretched across a frame or loom, intermeshed with lateral threads or weft. Weaving on different types of handlooms or devices operated by hand making use of natural fibre yarns such as silk, cotton, jute, linen or artificial or man-made fibres such as georgette, chiffon, crepe silk results in the creation of the handloom fabric.

Handloom weaving is done across the length and breadth of the country but there are locations which are still continuing with traditional methods of weaving, dyeing, adorning and printing like Pochampally, Dharmavaram, Narayanpet, Uppada, Gadwal, Chettinad, Arani, Bangalore, Mysore, Coimbatore, Madurai, Dharwad, Kerala, Chanderi, Benaras, Kolkata, Sambalpur, Bomkai, Baluchari, Nagaland, Assam, Meghalaya, Rajkot, Patan and some others.

Handlooms have their undisputed niche in the world of fabrics. Special and ever sought after, handlooms are dedicated weaves akin to an act of devotion, a fine display of art and craftsmanship. Neither are sarees identical, nor patterns blindly replicated, no design cliché nor motifs repeated is the special characteristic of Indian handlooms.

From coarse and average to fine and superfine thread counts, handloom varieties are available at distinct locations in most states of the country. You could have plain to lightly adorned sarees or sarees with a lot of exquisite adornments like mirror work, kundan work, badla work, beads, sequins, etc.
There could be simple single colour borders to attractive multi-colour ones, plain zari borders or heavily embroidered and adorned patch borders. Pallus or end pieces could have floral block prints, geometrical patterns, fancy abstract designs or a healthy mix of these or some other attractive feature.

The use of organic dyes, a good choice of vibrant colour combinations, hand painting, tribal art, batik, warli paintings, thematic representations of folklore and the epics or other popular themes through tribal art, kalamkari and a lot more, contribute to the variety and ensure continued interest of the market in handlooms.
Handlooms have the greatest advantage of each individual fabric item getting the undivided attention of the weaver. Sitting at the loom, he translates mental images of his design through the loom or looms that he operates by hand. The handloom magic is evident from the fine count weaves, the typical enchanting designs, elaborate

BEAUTIFUL CHANDERI SILK SAREES COLLECTION FROM MADHYA PRADESH@UNNATISILKS

Chanderi in M.P., India is traditionally the home of the famed Chanderi sarees, known for the stylistic Bootis and extraordinary threadwork on fine weaves in silk and cotton.

Chanderi silk and cotton sarees

The Chanderi silk saree has been familiar for its mostly light to moderate hues in pleasing patterns and its most attractive feature – the large bootis.

WEDDING PURE CHANDERI SILK SAREES COLLECTION ON

With plain to moderately adorned patterns or motifs and small but attractive coloured borders and exquisite pallus with some adornment, Chanderi Silks have been popular for the extremely fine texture and sheer quality.
It is the single filature method of weaving and the fineness of the yarn used that produces the outcome of a fabric so sheer and so fine in texture, that it is a tribute to the spirit of the weavers who are the authors of this wonderful creation. Enhancing the beauty further is the ‘Booti’, ‘Butti’ or motif, which is an interlaced, hand-woven, shape, consisting of gold, silver or copper coated threads.

The Asharfi Butti, or Gold Coin shaped Booti has been a popular choice since earlier times, though the pure gold or silver used in its making has given way to tested Zari, which is woven from synthetic yarn by needles of different sizes. The bigger version of the ‘Butti’ is popularly known as ‘Butta’.
A major difference in the making methods is that the ‘Bootis’ of hand-woven Chanderi saris, retain their shape and appearance throughout the life of the fabric, with no thread coming out from the ‘Butti’ structure.
The same cannot be said for the one woven from synthetic yarn, which tends to lose the initial shape and appearance after some time.

Brilliant floral designs or batik, adorn the Chanderi silk saree, and Buttis once only hand-woven on the fabric, have been replaced by gold-printed ‘Butti’prints on the silk fabric body.

The elegance, and the grandeur that the Chanderi Saree lends to the wearer, makes it ideal for special occasions, like marriages, weddings, festivals, parties and social functions. It could also serve as corporate-wear.

The Chanderi Silk saris at Unnati display an extraordinary array of Designer prints and neon varieties. There are dark coloured block prints with light and medium multi-coloured fancy borders and designer pallu. Sober to subdued colours with light coloured eye-catching motifs that sensationalize.

Half half sarees in matching shades of pastel colours and light-hued motifs with neon borders to heighten the effect. A whole lot of bright and tantalizing neons on display with stunning colour mixes.

In fact the wedding Chanderi silk sarees are very eye-filling and exciting, with splendid Bootis and elegant attach patch borders with embroidery to complement.

TRENDY PURE BAGH COTTON SAREES FROM MADHYA PRADESH@UNNATISILKS

Bagh is a unique style of block printing on handloom fabrics, the name coming from its origin in the current form in Bagh village of Madhya Pradesh handlooms, India. Despite the art being from another region brought by travelers who happened to settle in Manawar, the present style of Bagh printing is said to be from the early 60s when some Muslim Khatris migrated from Manawar to settle in this village.

TRENDY BAGH PRINTED COTTON SAREES ON

Bagh was practiced by these tribal muslims and the print subjects were mainly geometrical prints and floral compositions. There was a lull in between that led to many of these traditional practitioners deserting the art and being lured away to the production of synthetic fabrics that also came up at that time. It was Ismail Khatri who gave the Bagh its present form by staying on in the practice of this art and experimenting with designs.

nice cotton collection
In a brave move he altered the concept, the process and the look of these printed fabrics and brought the turnaround of a doomed art. He happened to get 200 year and 300 year old blocks which were based on traditional motifs that had been inspired by the 1500 year old cave paintings of nearby regions.

The Nariyal zaal, ghevar zaal motifs (Designs from Taj Mahal paintings), and others like Saj, Dakmandwa, Chameli or Jasmine flower, Maithir or the mushroom, leheriya or jurvaria (designs of small dots on a field) were experimented as block print designs.

He also had blocks made based on the Jaali work found in the Tajmahal and local forts. Initially he made use of Red and Black colors from alum and corroded iron and discovered green and yellow from vegetable dyes.
Till then it was an art of drawing and designs on paper. With his transfer of the block designs to fabrics he revolutionized the art.
Never before had such beautiful, exotic and captivating designs been seen on fabrics and by the use of these fast colors he got Bagh Prints to be noticed and accepted as a new form of adorning fabrics. To prove his point that handloom fabrics were well-suited for such prints, he printed 1230 different blocks on a single bed cover with imagination and logic.

bagh printing

This fetched him the National Award and then on appreciation nationwide for the Bagh Printed sarees. Today Bagh side by side incorporates modern day designs, involving geometrical patterns, captivating bootis, floral scapes and what not, to keep in the race.

Bagh Prints were initially made on handloom cotton sarees. Looking to the successful outcome Bagh was also tried out on wedding tussar silk sarees and crepe to the same end. The Bagh process seems simple but is quite elaborate and with a lot of washes for the fabric.

The fabric is soaked overnight in water and dried. Next a paste of goat droppings, raw salt, castor oil and water is made and the fabric is put in it, stamped upon till it is completely soaked. The fabric is laid out on a layered slope surface so that the water runs down and it dries.
Again washed by water it is ready to be printed upon. A wooden tray with a bamboo ‘Jaali’ fitted has red and black paste applied on it. Layers of thick wet cloth placed on these colors soak them up. The block is dipped in the colors and placed lightly on the stretched out fabric on a flat surface like a smooth stone slab table with seven layers of jute on it.

Printing of the designs done similarly across the length of the fabric, the sari is dried and kept aside for some days. Then it is washed in the nearby flowing Baghini river, dried, put in a cauldron containing a mix of Dhawadi flowers, Alzarin, and Tapai and dried one last time. The Bagh Printed fabric is complete.
Bagh Prints are seen on the Maheshwari cotton sareesgeorgette sarees and chiffon fabrics as well as the Chanderi cotton sarees and chanderi sico sarees. Single design motifs are printed on the field, the borders are matched with same color different shade or golden zari, but the pallu or end piece is like a designer affair. There are several block prints of different designs combined in a pattern and interspersed with large booti sections. Plenty of colors, lots of designer fare!
