PURE GEORGETTE PLAIN KALAMKARI PRINTED SAREES FROM PUNJAB@UNNATISILKS

Kalamkari is from ‘Kalam’ (pen) and ‘Kari’ (craftsmanship), words taken from the Persian for the art of hand painting done on fabrics with the use of a pen and extended to include hand block printing.

There are two schools of art that developed Kalamkari initially in India and from individual origins.

Weaving

Srikalahasti style that used the pen for drawing and filling in the colours, and with a strong influence of Hindu culture that specifically focused on religious subjects and scenes from the epics Ramayana and Mahabharata in its paintings.
Grand Look

The Machilipatnam style that came with an Islamic slant, had subjects of paintings mostly depicting flora and fauna, with floral designs as a backdrop on the fabric.
Trandy Wear

Both styles that have popularised Kalamkari have one thing in common – the depictions are fine and neatly drawn, there is extensive use of organic colours which are fast, there is no dilution in the skill and quality over the years.
Fancy look
Today’s Kalamkari has both these styles merged into one with different facets within the art.
Kalamkari saris showcase the traditional simplicity, elaborate themes, sharp detailing and attractive motifs in a host of bright and pleasing hues.

Kalamkari comes off beautifully on a whole lot of fabrics like silk, cotton, sico art silks such as georgette, chiffon, Supernet, crepe silk and others.

With vegetable dyes being used, colours are fast and long lasting. Motifs with trees, creepers, flowers, leaves, birds are popular subjects.

Gloss on the fabric comes from the traditional use of some natural substances such as myrobalan, cow’s milk, cow dung, seeds, plants and crushed flowers in the paintings.
The etching of lines and applying of colour is done with a finely sharpened short bamboo piece which reflects the devotion and skill of the ethnic craftsmen to bring about such exquisite masterpieces despite the limited resources.

A time-consuming and arduous task, that involves patience and dedication, it is the sharpness of the lines, the fine details and the picturesque outcome that make this ethnic effort worth its while.

Kalamkari pure cotton sarees in the printed variety have block prints featuring floral designs and geometrical patterns arranged in designer fashion.

Modern abstract designs have also been included in recent times to resounding applause from the market.

Ethnic art is like any other art. It is however the toil and the effort in producing these exceptional works of detail and flawlessness despite the limited resources available, that truly give it its value.

There are fine pure Tussar Silk Sarees with multi-colour Kalamkari. where multi-colour borders and thematic representations on the pallu or end piece that go well with the central design.

You have the largely plain or lightly adorned sarees with attractive hand painted bootis all over.

Then you have the veg.dyed sarees in Dupion silk sarees and Supernet sarees that have finely marked lines and accentuate the effect of the pictorial depictions.

PURE HANDLOOM COTTON BATIK PRINTED SAREES FROM BHIAR@UNNATISILKS

A lot of white floral art work on a contrastingly dark background, either on the entire portion or sections of the saree, it most probably would be Batik printing.

A wave of fresh breeze, novel and catchy, Batik prints are eye-catching for their picturesque white designs on coloured canvas.
Batik Prints

Batik on sarees came as a tried-out experiment that succeeded. An art from countries like Indonesia and China, our traditional stylists have over a period evolved a unique style of their own.
Handloom Saree

Using ‘resists’ for making designs on a fabric, the conventional Batik process has a resist or a physical block in some form or the other to prevent desired areas on the fabric from being penetrated by the initial dye.
Pure cotton
Generally wax is used as a resist in Batik. The block printed areas where resists are in place, come out as un-dyed areas in the dyed fabric and could be coloured differently in repeat wax dye process.
Trandy Look

This wax-dye process could be repeated several times at the same place or done at different places for every subsequent colour change.
Batik can be done very easily with various types of dyes & wax on cotton, silk and other natural fabrics like jute and blends.
The rarer type of Batik is Pen Batik. Fine designs are made on the fabric using ‘Tjanting’ tools.
Pen Batik is a little more painstaking comparatively on account of fine detailing to be taken done by hand and molten wax to be poured a certain temperature carefully on the design lines with Batik dropper pen.
Corporate look
A lot of care is taken since too thin a layer could give way to colour dye to seep through surface cracks.

Temperature of the wax is normally kept between 200 and 230 degrees.
In the former or conventional method vats or tubs with boiling water are used to melt away the wax.
In the latter a small tub with hot water is generally preferred.
After the entire resist dyeing process is over, and the wax has melted away in hot water, a neatly dyed and design filled Batik imprinted fabric is available.

There is a sensational Batik prints range of handloom cotton sarees from Unnati Silks where the colours are vibrant, the prints awesome and the themes mind-blowing.

In fact, cotton being easy to work with generally gives best results which the Batik Printed cotton sarees on display so finely showcase.

The idea in multi-layer colouring is to start with lighter shades of the dye and proceed to deeper ones.

There are whole lot of such multi-dyed, block printed Batiks at Unnati where care has been exercised at each step to ensure pure outcomes of fine light floral prints on good contrasting backgrounds.

And what a refreshing lot too! Unnati ‘s range of Pen Batik Salwar Kameez highlights the brilliant art on ethnic apparel.

In modern floral designs and abstract art using the virtues of Batik through the special pen, these fabrics usher in a new freshness and appeal.

HAND PAINTED BAGRU PRINTED SAREES FROM MADHYA PRADESH@UNNATISILKS

Bagru, a village in Rajasthan, is famous for its unique century-old Bagru Prints. Bagru Prints are known for their unique use of Natural Dyes and Hand Block Printing.

Wooden Hand Blocks are blocks of wood with holding grips on one side and a flat smooth surface or pressing side with design engraved on it on the other.
Bagru Prints

Designs engraved are transferred to the fabric by filling colours in the etched cavities and giving a sharp hit to the pressed block on the cloth.
From the entire quantity of cotton cloth desired sizes for colouring are cut. This is based on the nature of the fabric; saree, bedspread, dupatta or whatever, according to the individual measurements provided and in the numbers specified.
Trandy Look

The two-fold process of dyeing and block printing then begins. The fabric is pre-washed and soaked for several hours together to allow for dirt, oil and other contaminants to separate out.

Printed Saree
The smearing of the fabric or cloth to be dyed, is with Fuller’s Earth, brought from the riverside.
It is then dipped in turmeric water. Fuller’s Earth washed away imparts a creamish colour to the fabric.
Then it is soaked in the solution of Harda or fruit of the myrobalan plant and dried in the sun which gives it a yellowish cream hue.
This is a unique feature of Bagru Prints and the process is instrumental for the colour fastness of the Print dyes that would be applied.
The fabric is then printed with natural dyes or colorants which are derived from plants and animals.
Pure cotton

Different blocks with different colours are used for the different parts of the overall design. Since a majority of the natural dyes are from plants, Bagru Prints are also referred to as ‘eco-friendly’ prints.

The primary colours are available from the following substances. Blue is available from Indigo, with desired shade got from increasing the concentration or diluting it.
Green is available through indigo mixed with pomegranate. Red is through the Madder Root, while yellow is from turmeric.
After the fabric is completely block printed it is dried and later put in vats of boiling water containing alum and other agents.
The solution with fabric in it is constantly stirred to prevent sticking to any portion of the vessel. The process is complete with the fabric being washed again to remove excess colour and any other sticking impurities.

Hand Block Printing using natural colours is done mostly on fabrics such as sarees, quilts, bed covers, though pillow covers, turbans and other smaller items of cloth are also taken up.

Themes are generally floral prints, geometrical shapes etc. Bagru prints are done on off-white, ivory white or beige background sarees.

Motifs of circular designs, flowers, fruits, birds create allure on fabrics like crepe, georgette, chiffon, silk, cotton. Exotic Bagru prints are quite popular on south handloom cotton sarees woven with zari borders.

Unnati Silks has a good collection of Bagru prints on Rajasthani kota cotton sarees and Dupion silk sarees.
